Paul Thornton Gregg Jr., 37, of Mulberry, Florida, died on February 15, 2017, at his home on Gibson Street. He worked for Sims Crane and attended Family Worship Center. That night an argument between Paul and his girlfriend, Jessica Whidden, escalated after she and her 15-year-old son, Michael Cole Whidden, returned from a restaurant. According to accounts, Paul allegedly became aggressive; Michael retrieved a 12-gauge shotgun from his room and shot Paul in the back as Paul moved toward a master-bedroom closet where several weapons were stored. Paul died at the scene.
Michael was initially charged with first-degree murder by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The State Attorney’s Office later handled the case in juvenile court, reducing the charge to manslaughter. He pleaded no contest and received a sentence that included at least two years in a high-risk juvenile facility, a minimum of one year conditional release until his 21st birthday, participation in a transitional program, and a restriction barring him from living where weapons were kept. Paul’s family, including his father Paul Gregg Sr., publicly expressed forgiveness and said they would support contact with Jessica Whidden and her son during his rehabilitation.
Are there details about the household weapons storage or the sequence in the bedroom that anyone with knowledge can add?
