Four-year-old Avion Cymani Weaver died on January 20, 2017, in Auburndale, Florida, after a gunshot wound to the face. He was alone in the family apartment watching TV and found a loaded firearm belonging to his mother’s live-in boyfriend, Demeko Desean Robinson. Avion was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital but died shortly after.
Investigators say Robinson was outside with friends when the shooting happened. He initially told police Avion had hit his head on a table, then later acknowledged a 9mm handgun had been in the apartment. The gun, reported stolen from a Lakeland pawn shop, was recovered hidden behind an air conditioning unit at a nearby apartment. No lockbox was found; a sawed-off shotgun was also recovered. Robinson was charged with multiple offenses including aggravated manslaughter of a child, possession of a short-barreled rifle, tampering with evidence, possession of an altered firearm, and providing false information to law enforcement.
After more than two years in court, Robinson pleaded guilty to aggravated child neglect; other charges were dropped. He received 30 days of weekend work release at the Polk County Jail and five years of probation. If anyone knew Avion or has information about unsecured firearms in homes, please share what you know.
