Rebecca Rawson, 64, was shot and killed on January 10, 2017, in Parrish, Florida, while she sat in a car outside the home of 83-year-old Eugene Matthews. Rebecca, her daughter Kathryn Rawson, and brother-in-law Rodney Rawson had gone to Matthews’ residence while searching for a missing dog when Matthews opened fire. Rebecca was rushed to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly after; Kathryn and Rodney were not injured.

Matthews was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. He claimed he was standing his ground and later said the shooting was accidental; a jury convicted him of all charges. On April 19, 2018, Judge Brian Iten sentenced Matthews to life in prison for Rebecca’s murder and to concurrent 30-year terms for the attempted murders.

Rebecca was a longtime hairstylist who worked 30 years at Head Quarters Salon in Holmes Beach and at Lor-Ells Hair Design in Anna Maria. Kathryn described her mother in court as selfless and caring. Does anyone have information about Rebecca’s final movements that day or memories of her work in the community?
