Jayquon Johnson was 17 and a Brandon High School basketball player when he was shot and killed on January 1, 2017, in Valrico, Florida. The shooting happened in the afternoon on Cabbage Palm Drive after a confrontation tied to a drug transaction; Johnson had gone to the home of a 16-year-old boy for the deal. Both teenagers drew firearms during an argument, and Johnson was transported to a hospital where he later died.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office investigated for months. The 16-year-old claimed self-defense, and prosecutors determined there was insufficient evidence to disprove that claim, so he was not charged with murder; he did face unlawful possession and other weapons charges and was later sentenced as a youthful offender to community control, probation, and community service. The shooter’s mother, Heidi Quinn, buried the firearms used in the incident after finding her son standing over Johnson and was convicted of tampering with evidence.
Johnson’s family called for changes to Florida’s stand your ground laws and for justice after his death. If anyone knew Jayquon or has information about the shooting, please come forward.
