John Harold Cruz, 58, was found dead inside his Key West home at 312 Peacon Lane on September 18, 2016. The Monroe County medical examiner, Dr. Thomas Beaver, ruled the cause of death a gunshot wound to the back of the head, and Key West police immediately classified the death as a homicide — the city’s first in four years.

Cruz had worked as a city building inspector from 2005 to 2013. His wife, Jane Carolyn Cruz, 67, was at the house and placed the emergency call. Authorities conducted an extensive on-scene presence for several days, but would not release details about the weapon or the exact circumstances, citing the ongoing investigation. No arrests or public suspect identifications have been made and the State Attorney’s office declined to comment on leads or motive.

The family, long associated with the Peacon Lane property, has retained the community’s privacy and support. Are there neighbors or others who recall unusual activity around Peacon Lane in the weeks before September 18, 2016?
