Bobbi Wheeler, 30, was shot to death on June 23, 2016, at a 50-acre property in Groveland, Florida that she shared with her longtime boyfriend and the father of her two children, Virgil Hyde III.

Prosecutors argued Hyde’s actions were driven by stress related to the addiction and legal battles. Hyde’s defense asserted he was insane at the time of the shooting. Hyde was later convicted of second-degree murder in 2018 and was awaiting sentencing when he died of pneumonia in jail in 2020. The Wheeler family filed a wrongful death lawsuit and a community GoFundMe raised $41,000 to help relocate the mobile home where Bobbi’s mother had lived.
