Emily Tensley, 27, of Bartow, Florida, was found unresponsive in the breezeway of her Azalea Gardens apartment complex on June 18, 2016 after being shot. Police and paramedics tried to revive her, but she died at Bartow Regional Medical Center. Her children were present at the scene.

Investigators identified Emily’s ex-boyfriend, Patrick Christopher Panton, as the primary suspect. Witnesses said an altercation escalated and Panton drew a small caliber handgun and shot her in the abdomen. Panton, a convicted felon, fled and was arrested two days later in Orlando after an anonymous tip.

Panton was charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; he later pleaded no contest to manslaughter and related charges and received a 20-year prison sentence that included counts for resisting an officer and violating probation. Reports also describe a history of threats and harassment by Panton toward Emily.
