Tommy Salter, 41, of Monticello, Florida, was shot and killed on the morning of May 4, 2016, in downtown Monticello after an argument with Antwain Devon Coates escalated. According to witness accounts, the dispute involved derogatory remarks by Salter about Coates; Coates left the scene and then returned with a firearm and another individual before shooting Salter, who died at the scene.

Salter was born May 10, 1974, in Thomasville and was known locally as a handyman involved in the community. He married Kiashadra Lee on November 4, 2008, and was a father to several children; both of his parents, Juanita Slater and Wardell Ross Sr., had predeceased him. The shooting drew significant attention from Monticello residents and law enforcement.

Antwain Devon Coates, 31 at the time, was charged with first-degree murder and turned himself in to the Jefferson County Jail later that evening. Witness statements and scene evidence were cited in the investigation. Did anyone in the community have information about Salter’s activities or movements that morning?
