Earlon Eugley, a 77-year-old white man and former U.S. Coast Guard Chief Boatswain Mate, was found dead in the backyard of his home on NE 26th Avenue in Okeechobee, Florida, on January 30, 2016. Neighbors discovered him; the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office called the death suspicious and initial reports suggested he might have been shot, though the Sheriff’s Office did not publicly confirm that detail. The medical examiner completed an autopsy, but results were not immediately released.
Eugley split his time between Maine and Florida as a seasonal resident. He had served 20 years in the Coast Guard and later engaged in activities such as swordfishing and training racehorses. Investigators searched the scene, interviewed neighbors and potential witnesses, and noted reports that Eugley had been involved in disputes in the area.
No arrests had been announced and the Sheriff’s Office was offering a cash reward for tips that could lead to an arrest. Does anyone in the Okeechobee or Waldoboro communities have information that could help clarify what happened to Mr. Eugley?
