Deputy Sheriff William J. Bill Myers, 64, was ambushed and fatally shot on September 22, 2015, in Shalimar, Florida. Myers had just finished serving a domestic violence injunction at an attorney’s office on Plew Avenue and was leaving when 33-year-old Joel Dixon Smith opened fire from behind, striking Myers multiple times in the back and head. Myers died shortly after the attack at about 8:20 a.m.
After the shooting, Smith fled to a nearby hotel and barricaded himself in a room. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team evacuated the building and established a perimeter. Following roughly 90 minutes of negotiations, Smith emerged with a firearm and was shot and killed by law enforcement officers.
Myers was a U.S. Air Force veteran who had served 26 years with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, returning as a part-time deputy in January 2015 to help serve civil papers. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and seven grandchildren. Does anyone have information about the moments leading up to the service of the injunction or the scene at the attorney’s office?
