Ernestine Griner Hines, 59, of Green Cove Springs, Florida, was shot and killed on August 23, 2015. The shooting happened about 4:10 a.m. while she sat in the front passenger seat of a van on Washington Lane. She was taken to a local hospital and died of her injuries.

Police identified 25-year-old Victor Lamar Cruger Jr. as the shooter; he had been seated behind Hines in the vehicle. Two of Hines’s daughters were in the van—one driving and the other seated next to Cruger—and both witnessed the shooting and saw Cruger attempt to reload before one daughter escaped. Cruger fled the scene and was later located in Gainesville after a multi-agency standoff; a nearby elementary school was evacuated during the incident.

Cruger was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, armed burglary, and possession of a firearm by a felon. The case profoundly affected Hines’s family and the community.
