Jonathan Wells was 14 when he died after being shot in the chest with a pellet gun on April 10, 2015, in a Key West apartment. He was found unresponsive and had vomited, was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center and then airlifted to a Miami hospital, and died five days later. The pellet gun was recovered as evidence.
The Key West police report says Jonathan was playing with the pellet gun when it accidentally discharged, but the report did not specify who was holding the gun when it fired. No arrests or charges had been announced and the investigation was described as ongoing; the police report available to the public was heavily redacted and left key questions unanswered. Jonathan was a student at Horace O’Bryant Middle School and a baseball player; the community held vigils and a GoFundMe was organized to assist his parents, Denise and Steve.
If anyone has information about the circumstances in that apartment or who was present that day, please share what you know.
