Kaleb Ahles was two years old when he died on January 21, 2015, in Tarpon Springs, Florida, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The family was moving out of their home when Kaleb accessed a .380-caliber handgun kept in his father’s glove compartment and the weapon discharged. His mother performed CPR before he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office investigated and concluded the shooting was accidental. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said the parents would not face criminal charges, noting the firearm had been lawfully stored in the glove compartment and that no legal action would be pursued. The death drew attention to gun safety and the risks firearms pose to young children.

If anyone knew the family or has information about the circumstances that could help clarify how the child accessed the firearm, please share it.
