On January 5, 2015, 16-year-old Damien Kornegay was shot and killed while asleep in the living room of his family home in White Springs, Florida. Two younger sisters were directly involved: 15-year-old Ariel Kornegay and 11-year-old Nicole Kornegay. After Damien slept, Nicole freed Ariel, the sisters entered the parents’ bedroom through an exterior window and Ariel retrieved a gun that was used to shoot Damien.
Ariel was initially charged with premeditated murder but later accepted a plea to a lesser burglary charge and was placed on probation with the Department of Juvenile Justice until her 19th birthday, with requirements including therapeutic counseling, obeying caregivers, perfect school attendance and testifying in a child-neglect case against the parents. Nicole was also arrested and charged with premeditated murder, and the parents were arrested on child-neglect charges. Reports in court described a home in poor condition and allegations that the children suffered prolonged sexual and physical abuse and severe neglect.
What new information or leads might help clarify the sequence of events inside the house that night?
