In the early morning hours of June 3, 2014, the body of 40-year-old Ricky Carlos Hall of Baltimore was found in a field in the 1400 block of Fillmore Street. Paramedics pronounced Hall dead at the scene; investigators reported significant trauma and the medical examiner was asked to perform an autopsy to establish the official cause of death.

Hall, also known as Kandy and identified as a transgender woman, was one of three homicide victims in Baltimore within a 24-hour span, which prompted a broad police investigation. Her killing heightened concern in the city’s transgender community, especially after another transgender woman, Mia Henderson, was murdered five weeks later and authorities at the time said they were examining a possible connection.
