Daniel Harshman was 14 when he died on October 29, 2014, after sustaining gunshot wounds to the upper neck and chest. He had been at the home of a 17-year-old friend, Dalton Edwards, when the two boys were reportedly playing with firearms. Daniel was holding a .20-gauge shotgun while Dalton picked up a 9mm handgun; Dalton said the handgun discharged accidentally and struck Daniel. Daniel was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office investigated and obtained a search warrant to determine the guns’ ownership and how they became accessible to the teenagers. Dalton Edwards was arrested and charged with manslaughter and held in the Marion County Juvenile Detention Facility without bond. The community mourned Daniel’s death and the case underscored concerns about firearm safety and storage.
Did anyone in Belleview have information about how the guns were stored or how the boys gained access to them?
