James Shores was a 66-year-old retired game warden from Chipley, Florida who was shot to death on his property on April 19, 2014. Known as Coon, Shores was discovered after what investigators say began with a burglary on his land. He reportedly encountered two men, Zachary Taylor Wood and Dillon Rafsky, who beat, bound, and shot him execution-style and then attempted to set his body on fire.

Wood and Rafsky were arrested and charged with first-degree murder and robbery. At trial the prosecution argued the killing was premeditated; the jury found Wood guilty of first-degree murder and robbery and recommended the death penalty. In May 2015 Zachary Taylor Wood was sentenced to death. Details about Dillon Rafsky’s sentence were not as prominently reported.

What details about Shores or the events on his property might still help explain how this crime unfolded?
