Kemar O’Neil Austin, a 29-year-old African American man from North Lauderdale, Florida, was shot and killed at a gas station in Lauderdale Lakes in the early hours of January 12, 2014. Emergency responders found him with gunshot wounds; he did not survive.

Law enforcement investigated the shooting and arrested a suspect shortly after the incident. That person was charged in connection with Austin’s death and the matter proceeded to court, where prosecution and defense presented competing accounts.
