Correctional Colonel Gregory Guy Malloy, 44, was killed on February 2, 2011, in Holmes County, Florida while taking part in a high-risk operation to apprehend a suspect wanted for the murder of his parents. A hunter had encountered the wanted man in a wooded area and exchanged gunfire, then called 911. Colonel Malloy, a 22-year veteran and canine handler at the Holmes Correctional Facility, was brought in to track the suspect.
As Malloy and his team closed in, a fierce gunfight broke out. Both Colonel Malloy and the suspect were fatally shot; another canine officer suffered a graze wound and survived. The suspect’s death during the shootout ended the manhunt and meant no further arrests were pursued. Malloy is remembered by colleagues and his community for bravery and dedication, and he left behind a wife and daughter.
