Ashley Smith was 22 and a lifelong resident of Fort Pierce, Florida. Born and raised in the city, she attended local schools and was an active member of Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Her death on November 15, 2010, shocked the community.
Ashley was found deceased at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. An autopsy confirmed she had been strangled and authorities classified the case as a homicide. The investigation led to the arrest of Thomas Barnard, a former resident of Vero Beach, who was charged with first-degree murder. A St. Lucie County jury later found Barnard guilty; the conviction was reached after prosecutors presented evidence that he had strangled Ashley.
Ashley’s family and friends attended the trial seeking justice and continue to mourn her loss. If anyone knew Ashley or has information about her life or the events surrounding her death, please share what you know.
