Jason Lee Gilmore Jr. was an 11-year-old boy from Lake Worth, Florida, who died on February 1, 2009. Born November 26, 1997, he attended Coral Reef Elementary School and lived with his father, Jason Lee Gilmore Sr. He liked sports and admired Kevin Garnett.
On February 1 Jason was at a house owned by the parents of his mother’s boyfriend at 4297 Lilac Circle, where children were playing. A loaded .40-caliber pistol was produced and a 9-year-old boy playfully pointed it at Jason’s head and accidentally pulled the trigger. Jason was flown to Delray Medical Center but died shortly after. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office detained and questioned children present; the 9-year-old admitted to accidentally shooting Jason. The matter was presented to the state attorney and sent to a grand jury, and the state Department of Children and Families also investigated how the children accessed the firearm.
