Fresnel Atilus, an ice cream vendor in Lake Park, Florida, was fatally shot while operating his truck on December 4, 2008. He was well known in the community for his cheerful demeanor and for bringing ice cream to children and neighborhood customers.
The investigation led to arrests of several suspects. Frank Collins, 16 at the time, was convicted and sentenced to life without parole; the judge cited Collins’s lack of remorse and a criminal history including trespassing, burglary, grand theft, and assault. Michael Murdock, who confessed to driving the getaway car, had his conviction and life sentence overturned by an appeals court on the grounds that his confession was obtained without proper advisement of his constitutional rights, prompting a new trial.
Atilus’s wife, Iranaise, was pregnant with their seventh child when he was killed. The shooting left a lasting impact on the family and the Lake Park community. Does anyone have memories of Fresnel or information about the case that could help fill remaining gaps?
