Brittany Carleo was 17 and living in Port St. Lucie, Florida, when she was fatally shot on July 15, 2006. She had dropped out of Port St. Lucie High School and was staying with her aunt after her parents relinquished custody. On the morning of July 15 she was working at a Tropical Smoothie Café on Port St. Lucie Boulevard when 42-year-old Scott David Uslan entered and shot her. Uslan had a history of molesting Brittany and had been harassing her for months; police had arrested him days earlier for making harassing phone calls but he was released on bond. The shooting followed an hour-long standoff with police. Uslan then turned the gun on himself, ending the immediate legal proceedings.

Letters and cards found with Brittany suggested a deeply troubled, manipulative relationship involving Uslan and his son Chris, who was Brittany’s ex-boyfriend. Brittany’s family publicly expressed anguish and anger over what they described as preventable failures in the criminal justice response. Does anyone have information about Brittany’s life, the harassment she experienced, or contacts who might help clarify the timeline leading up to July 15, 2006?
