Lieutenant Charles A. ’Bo’ Harrison, 57, a 31-year veteran of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, was shot and killed on June 1, 2003, in Lacoochee, Florida. Harrison was sitting in his patrol car observing activity at a nightclub on U.S. Route 301 when a high-powered rifle round fired from nearby woods penetrated the trunk of his car and struck him in the back. He was rushed to Dade City Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival. He was 15 days from retirement at the time.
Two days after the shooting, 19-year-old Alfredie Steele Jr. turned himself in and confessed to firing the fatal shot, saying it was retaliation for a friend’s death in a car crash while fleeing police. Steele was arrested, indicted for first-degree murder, and later convicted; he received life without parole. The case attracted attention because Harrison was the department’s highest-ranking Black officer then and because of the sniper-style attack.
Are there details about Harrison’s patrol assignment that anyone who knew him or the scene can add?
