On January 6, 1999, 29-year-old Sonya Nicole Speights was shot and killed at the dining room table of her Port St. John, Florida home while working on a jigsaw puzzle. The shooters were two teenagers in the household: 12-year-old Curtis Fairchild Jones and his 13-year-old sister Catherine Jones, children of Speights’ boyfriend. The siblings used their father’s 9mm handgun; Speights died at the scene.

Authorities initially considered jealousy over the father’s attention as a motive. Investigators later reported that the children had planned to kill not only Speights but also their father and a male relative they accused of sexually abusing them, saying their pleas for help had been ignored. The pair fled into nearby woods but were captured soon after and charged with first-degree murder; they later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and were sentenced to prison.

Multiple agencies had reportedly investigated the household for abuse before the killing but closed their inquiries without action. Does anyone have information about the household or the earlier investigations that could shed light on what was missed?
