On June 13, 1993, Officer Jeffery Warren Tackett, 28, of the Belleair Police Department in Florida was killed while responding to a report of suspicious noises outside a condominium. Tackett encountered a male attempting to break into the unit; during an arrest attempt the suspect gained control of Tackett’s service weapon and shot him. The shot severed Tackett’s femoral artery and he bled to death at the scene.
The suspect was identified as 31-year-old Lorenzo Lamar Jenkins and was later apprehended in Clearwater, Florida. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department led the investigation; Jenkins was charged, convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Tackett had served with the Belleair Police Department for five years and remains the only officer from that department killed in the line of duty.
If anyone has information about Tackett’s last call or the incident that night, please share what you know.
