Pedro Antonio ’Pete’ Cainas was a 34-year-old sergeant with the Hialeah Police Department who died after being shot while responding to a neighbor dispute at 1655 West 44 Place. On November 11, 1992, Sergeant Cainas spoke to a complainant and then knocked on the other resident’s door; a shot was fired through the door and struck him in the back of the head. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, remained in a coma, and died eight days later on November 19, 1992.
The shooter was arrested, convicted of second-degree murder, and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Cainas had served nearly 11 years with Hialeah PD and previously worked for Riviera PD for one year and Miami Springs PD for three years. He was survived by his parents, sister, a brother who also served with Hialeah PD, and his fiancée.
Does anyone have memories of Sergeant Cainas, knew his family, or information about the incident that hasn’t been shared publicly?
