Detective Sergeant Steven Ernest Bauer, 39, was killed on January 3, 1992, in North Miami, Florida while working an off-duty uniformed security detail at a bank at 13490 NW 7th Avenue. He died within minutes, reportedly in the arms of the two tellers he was protecting.
A tip led to the arrest of five suspects 17 days after the slaying; the men were charged with first-degree murder. Bauer was survived by his wife, three children, his father, and six siblings, two of whom were also police officers in Miami. The case underscores the risk faced by officers even while off duty and the impact of his loss on family and community.
If anyone knew Detective Bauer, the two tellers present that day, or has information about the ambush, please come forward.
