Fritz d’Or, a 38-year-old Haitian American journalist and radio talk show host, was assassinated on March 15, 1991, in Little Haiti, Miami. Known for pro-democratic and pro-Aristide commentary on WLQY-AM (1320), d’Or was active in political organizations, community education programs and worked as a paralegal at the Haitian Refugee Center. He was standing outside his office near Northeast Second Avenue and 59th Street when he was fatally shot four times.
The killing was tied to local political tensions: Billy Alexander, a Haitian American, was paid $2,000 for the hit and was later convicted. Glossy Bruce Joseph acted as the lookout; he was arrested in May 1991 and later convicted and sentenced to 25 years. Hitler Fleurinord was charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Louis Thermitus, a local record store owner whom d’Or had accused of ties to the Tonton Macoute and support for the regime that ousted Aristide, was never charged in connection with the murder.
The FBI investigated amid a string of political assassinations of pro-democracy Haitian journalists in Little Haiti. The community of about 60,000 was deeply affected and remained divided and fearful. Did anyone in Little Haiti at the time have additional information about threats against d’Or or about contacts between local figures and the defendants?
