Robert Franklin McRae Sr., 72, and his wife Kathryn were found shot to death in their Graceville, Florida, kitchen on January 29, 1989. Both deaths were ruled homicides; two ski masks were recovered at the scene, suggesting at least two perpetrators. Early investigators thought a home invasion had occurred, but robbery was later not considered the primary motive — valuables remained in the house and only a ring from Kathryn’s hand and some money from Robert’s wallet were reported missing.
Robert McRae was a former Gulf Power director and was due to testify before a federal grand jury about alleged company involvement in a multimillion-dollar tax fraud scheme and illegal political donations at the time he was killed. That connection introduced possible motives beyond a simple burglary. Hundreds of persons of interest have been examined over the decades, multiple agencies have participated, and the case remains unsolved as the cold case team continues to re-examine evidence.
Does anyone have information about Robert or Kathryn McRae, their home in Graceville, or unusual activity in the area around January 29, 1989?
