Emilio Fidel Miyares, a 27-year-old Hispanic police officer with six years on the Hialeah Police Department, was killed on November 6, 1986, at the Palm Springs Mall in Hialeah, Florida. He and his partner had responded to a shoplifting call, encountered two suspects, and asked for identification. The suspects fled, a foot chase followed, and during a struggle one suspect took Officer Miyares’ service weapon and shot him, killing him at the scene.
The suspect was later arrested, convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death; that convicted individual died by suicide on death row in 1994. Officer Miyares left a wife, a young daughter, a son, his parents and a brother.
Does anyone have memories of Officer Miyares, the mall incident, or information about his service that could help preserve his story?
