Corporal Lemon Harvey, a 34-year-old African American officer with eight years on the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, was shot and killed on December 15, 1981, in Thonotosassa, Florida. He was ambushed in the driveway of his home as he exited his patrol car at the end of his shift and was found by children on their way to school the next morning.
The investigation determined the attack was premeditated. A 36-year-old man carried out the shooting after being hired by another man, aged 38, over a personal matter. Both suspects were arrested, charged, and convicted of first-degree murder and received life sentences with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Harvey left behind a wife and two children; his death was described as a significant loss to the community and his family.
Did anyone in the area at the time notice anything unusual that morning or have information about the circumstances leading up to the ambush?
