On August 1, 1980, Dr. Juan Dumois, a 46-year-old physician from Tampa, Florida, was shot and killed at the Kingfish Boat Ramp in Holmes Beach during a quadruple murder. Dr. Dumois and his two sons, Eric (13) and Mark (9), were returning from a fishing trip; after loading their boat onto a trailer hitched to their station wagon they were approached by a man on a bicycle who asked for directions, then for a ride. The man was allowed into the vehicle and produced a firearm; the three were killed instantly. Raymond Barrows, Dr. Dumois’s brother-in-law, was critically injured in the attack and survived the initial shooting but later died of a heart attack two years afterward.
The shooter fled and shortly afterward shot and killed Robert Matzke, a 60-year-old local resident and Air Force veteran, at a nearby grocery store after Matzke confronted him. The Holmes Beach Police Department has continued to investigate, preserved evidence, and followed leads, but no arrests have been announced and the motive remains unknown. Has anyone who knew the family or was in the area that day seen or heard anything that might help identify the man on the bicycle?
