On August 1, 1980, a mass shooting at the Kingfish Boat Ramp in Holmes Beach, Florida, killed 13-year-old Eric Dumois, his father Dr. Juan Dumois, 47, and his 9-year-old brother Mark Dumois. The family had returned from a fishing trip when a man on a bicycle approached, said he had injured his ankle and asked for a ride. According to accounts, the man got into the back seat with the children and opened fire, killing the three family members instantly.

A 60-year-old witness, retired Air Force colonel Robert Matzke, pursued the suspect to a nearby grocery store and was shot and killed as well. The assailant, described as a white male, then loaded his bicycle into a tan-colored vehicle and drove away. The Holmes Beach Police Department and the FBI investigated, but no arrests have been made and the killer’s identity remains unknown.

The case has been re-examined over the years and Manatee County Crime Stoppers is still seeking tips. If anyone knew the Dumois family or saw something that day, please share information that could help bring justice.
