Lillian Levine Gans, 60, and her husband Sydney Gans were abducted and murdered on July 17, 1974, in Bay Harbor Islands, Florida. The couple were taken hostage by Thomas Knight, later known as Askari Abdullah Muhammad; Knight, then a parolee, forced Sydney to drive to the Ganses’ home, seized Lillian there, and then drove the three to downtown Miami. Knight compelled Sydney to withdraw $50,000 from a bank, and despite Sydney’s attempt to alert the bank manager, the pair were later taken to a remote area in South Miami-Dade and executed.

Knight was sentenced to death in 1975 for the murders of Sydney and Lillian Gans. His execution was delayed repeatedly over many years by appeals and legal challenges, and his case became tied to broader disputes over capital punishment procedures. The Ganses’ daughter, Harriet Shapiro, described the prolonged process as an immense emotional burden for the family.

Anyone with recollections of the Ganses, their last movements on July 17, 1974, or information about the abduction and bank withdrawal is asked to come forward.
