Edward Riverboat Riley Jr. was 34 when he was killed on April 30, 1974, in Broward County, Florida. Riley, a member of the Hell’s Angels, was involved in gun running with associates Albert Oskie Simmons and George Whiskey George Hartman when they were ambushed by members of the rival Outlaws Motorcycle Club and executed. The three bodies were found weighted with concrete blocks in a water-filled gravel pit north of Fort Lauderdale.
The slayings were tied to ongoing violent conflict between the Hell’s Angels and the Outlaws. Several Outlaws members were implicated: James Big Jim Nolan, leader of the Outlaws’ South Florida chapter, was tried three times for ordering the murders and was acquitted in 1979. Henry Funky Tim Amis received a life sentence for his role but was later killed in a prison fight; William Gatemouth Edson and Ralph Lucifer Yannotta received lesser sentences after testifying against Nolan. Edward Spider Risinger was arrested in northwestern Indiana in 1991 after living under an alias and extradited to Florida on charges linked to the 1974 killings.
