On the late afternoon of July 20, 2022, 22-year-old Brad Antonio Collins of Homerville, Georgia, was shot during an argument at Poppell Square and later died at Clinch Memorial Hospital. Collins sustained multiple gunshot wounds; two bullet wounds to his chest were fatal. Bystanders transported him to the hospital after the shooting.

Investigators recovered multiple shell casings and bullet fragments at the scene and found Collins’s red BMW there with numerous bullet holes. The Homerville Police Department identified 22-year-old Marthony Zamark Hood as the primary suspect; witnesses said a verbal dispute between Collins and Hood escalated into an exchange of gunfire and Hood fired at Collins’s vehicle. Hood fled but surrendered at the Coffee County Jail in Douglas, Georgia, on July 24, 2022, and was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Collins was a father to five young children and his death has deeply affected the Homerville community.
