Eighteen-year-old Marcus Shaffer, a Conyers resident, was found dead from a single gunshot wound on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. The shooting occurred on a trail off Centennial Olympic Parkway near the Georgia International Horse Park; the Rockdale County Coroner’s Office pronounced him dead at the scene after officers responded to a 911 call at about 5:14 p.m.
An 18-year-old friend who was with Shaffer made the 911 call and has been cooperating with investigators. A semi-automatic shotgun was the only weapon recovered at the location. Early findings by the Conyers Police Department described the death as the apparent result of a firearms-related accident based on the witness account and evidence collected.
No charges had been filed and police were not seeking other persons of interest as investigators continued to try to establish the precise sequence of events that led to the firearm discharging. Did anyone in the area that evening see or hear anything that could help clarify what happened?
