On Tuesday, July 5, 2022, two men were found dead at the Regency Inn on West Currahee Street in Toccoa, Georgia. Officers discovered 52-year-old Keith Bernard Tooley inside a motel room with a fatal gunshot wound; officers rendered aid but Tooley died at the scene. A handgun was later recovered at the scene.
Officers then entered another motel room where 32-year-old Chanin Emil Mayfield was present and armed. After verbal commands to drop the weapon were not followed, officers fired and fatally wounded Mayfield. He also died at the scene despite attempts to provide medical assistance.
The Toccoa Police Department asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct an independent inquiry into Tooley’s death and the officer-involved shooting of Mayfield. At the time of the reports, it had not been officially stated whether Mayfield was considered a suspect in Tooley’s death; the GBI investigation was to be turned over to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review. Does anyone have information about either man’s movements at the Regency Inn that day?
