A late-winter accident in Milledgeville, Georgia, ended with the death of 10-year-old Charles Patton, known as CJ. On a Sunday in February 2022, while he was with other children at a residence on Waller Street, Patton was struck in the head by a pellet from a rifle. Emergency crews from Baldwin County Fire Rescue and Grady Emergency Medical Services treated him on scene and he was airlifted to The Children’s Hospital of Atlanta. He died on Wednesday, February 23, 2022.

A fundraising page created by a family friend described the shooting as an accident, saying the pellet lodged in his brain after striking his temple. The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office investigated the shooting and arrested 17-year-old Jamarius Walls of Milledgeville; Walls was charged with felony involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of the fourth-grader from Midway Hills Academy.
