On a Tuesday afternoon in Macon, Georgia, 24-year-old Shawn Deontae Watts Jr was shot and killed behind a duplex in the 700 block of Grier Street. Another man, 18-year-old Cleveland Raines, suffered gunshot wounds and was driven from the scene to a hospital by his brother; Cleveland was reported in stable condition.
Investigators arrested 24-year-old Khalil Malik Raines and charged him with murder. Court filings say the encounter began with a dispute over a stolen firearm: Watts allegedly punched Cleveland and shot him twice in the leg, then pointed a gun at both brothers. Khalil Raines said Watts fired at him as he ran away; Khalil then pursued Watts and shot him in the back of the head and shoulder. After Watts collapsed, Khalil allegedly put his gun down and took his brother to the hospital.
The defense moved to dismiss the murder charge claiming self-defense. A judge denied the motion, finding that whether Khalil subjectively believed he needed to protect himself and his brother and whether that belief was reasonable must be decided by a jury. Does anyone have information about the incident or either of the men involved?
