Asa Junior Wood Jr., 59, was fatally shot while working his USPS route on Hebron Road in Banks County, Georgia, on the morning of August 7, 2021. Wood, a mail carrier for 28 years who filled in that day, was found deceased inside his postal truck after a 911 call reporting an intentional shooting. He is remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather known for his joyful spirit and daily kindnesses to residents along his route.

Investigators from the Banks County Sheriff’s Office were joined by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. A person of interest and a vehicle description led deputies to stop a car later that day. The driver, identified as 50-year-old Larry Steven Grogan of Danielsville, fled and was pursued; after the chase he fired on deputies and was wounded by return fire. Grogan was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries and later booked. A federal grand jury subsequently indicted him on multiple counts including murder of a federal employee and related firearms and assault charges. No motive has been publicly released.
