Joshua Brooks, 26, was fatally shot during a dispute with his 19-year-old brother at a basement apartment on Northwood Lake Court in Duluth, Georgia, on a Sunday afternoon. The younger sibling, Christopher Robert Brooks, called 911 saying he had shot someone trying to break into his apartment, but witnesses reported a heated verbal argument before gunfire. One witness recorded audio of Christopher threatening Joshua, who reportedly replied Do it or Shoot it.
Officers arriving at the scene found Christopher kneeling over Joshua with his hands on Joshua’s abdomen. Christopher complied with officers and was taken into custody; the firearm was found a short distance away, and Christopher told police he had tossed it at the dispatcher’s instruction. No weapon was found on or near Joshua. Joshua was taken to a hospital in Lawrenceville and died of his injuries. Christopher was arrested and charged with murder and booked into the Gwinnett County Jail without bond. Joshua is remembered as a father of three; his father, Robert Brooks, described him as his heartbeat and friend.
Are there witnesses or neighbors who heard the argument or saw what led up to the shooting?
