Traffic on Interstate 75 in Tifton, Georgia, was disrupted on the afternoon of June 17, 2021, when calls came in reporting a vehicle crash and the sound of gunfire near the 59-mile marker. First responders found 52-year-old James Stacy Lumpkin of Lenox dead at the scene. The Tift County Deputy Coroner could not definitively determine cause of death, so Lumpkin’s body was sent for autopsy.
Because the incident involved both a wreck and reported gunshots, local authorities classified the case as a homicide and asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to assist. The investigation is ongoing; no arrests or suspect identifications have been publicly announced. If anyone saw the crash or heard gunfire on I-75 near mile marker 59 on June 17, 2021, please share what was seen or heard with investigators.
