On March 16, 2021, 21-year-old Melvin Porter was found dead inside a wrecked minivan in the backyard of a home on Silver Way in the Silver Creek Ranch subdivision of Lithia Springs, Georgia. Deputies responding to reports of a vehicle collision and shots fired discovered Porter behind the wheel with a fatal gunshot wound; investigators say he was shot while driving and then lost control of the vehicle.
Eyewitness statements and home surveillance footage led authorities to identify 17-year-old Nathanael Michael Searcy as the primary suspect; warrants were issued and he was taken into custody on a charge of felony murder. Two other men, Abdulmujeeb Adisa Raji and Kyle James Girard, were arrested and charged with being party to a crime, and additional charges were announced against Girard. The incident was later tied to a drug deal after investigators determined Porter had been driving a van for another person who was hiding in the vehicle during the meeting.
