Paul Andre Michels, 54, was working as a handyman at Young’s Asian Massage near Acworth, Georgia, on March 16, 2021, when he was shot and killed. He had just built a shelf and was leaning over a counter using his cellphone when a 21-year-old man entered, emerged from a restroom with a 9mm handgun, and fatally shot Michels once in the head. The gunman then killed three other people at that location and later carried out additional shootings in Atlanta that left eight people dead in total.
Michels was an Army veteran, a married man of more than 20 years, and one of nine siblings. He had grown up in Detroit and lived in the Atlanta area for over two decades. The shooter, Robert Aaron Long, was arrested the same day and told investigators he was motivated by a sex addiction; prosecutors in Fulton County contend race and gender were also factors because six of the eight victims were women of Asian descent. Long pleaded guilty to the Cherokee County killings, including Michels’s death, and received consecutive life sentences and additional years.
Did anyone who knew Paul or saw him working at the spa that day notice anything unusual before the shooting?
