On the evening of January 20, 2021, 56-year-old Rosemary D. Michael of Hinesville, Georgia, was fatally shot at a convenience store at the corner of Memorial Drive and Gause Street. Officers were dispatched at 6:03 p.m. after a 911 call reporting a carjacking; Michael was found unresponsive on the driver’s side of her vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency treatment. One shell casing was recovered.
Investigators determined the shooting was domestic in nature rather than a random robbery. Surveillance footage shows a man, later identified as Davonta Johnson, approach Michael’s vehicle, make a verbal demand, and during a struggle as she searched her car, produce a gun and fire a single shot. Johnson and Michael had been in a romantic relationship and were separated; investigators say he had allegedly been stalking her. After the shooting he fled and attempted a second carjacking across the street at Liberty Prayer Church; that woman was not harmed and the stolen vehicle was later found in Claxton.
On January 21, 2021, Johnson surrendered to authorities through a family member and was taken into custody with injuries consistent with a physical altercation. He was charged with malice murder and felony murder and held at the Liberty County jail awaiting court. Does anyone have information about Michael’s last movements that evening or about the events at the convenience store?
