A late-night gathering at the Melrose Mobile Home Park in Jonesboro, Georgia, turned deadly on Sunday, November 15, 2020. A shooting at about 10:20 p.m. left one man dead at the scene in a grassy area in front of a home and three others wounded. Emergency responders transported three victims to a local hospital, where 34-year-old Everardo Esparza later died. The other person killed was 34-year-old Carlos Rebolledo of Jonesboro; two additional victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The Clayton County Police Department’s criminal investigations division took over the double homicide probe. The initial inquiry did not immediately establish a motive. In February 2021, investigators arrested 20-year-old Alberto Ayala Peñaloza at a home in Tucker; he was charged with one count of murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the shootings and was held without bond.
