On April 9, 2020, Joseph Woolfolk III, a 17-year-old high school student in Macon, Georgia, was shot and killed on Winston Drive. Bibb County deputies arrived just before 10:30 p.m. to find two male teenagers with gunshot wounds. Woolfolk was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds; a 16-year-old was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening leg wound.
Woolfolk had been a student at Windsor Academy and played football and basketball there; he also played basketball for Rutland High School and was a standout on his Amateur Athletic Union team. The sheriff’s investigation determined the shooting was related to an illegal drug transaction. The 16-year-old, identified as Jieyre Chavis-Moore, was later charged with murder and booked as an adult. Two more arrests followed: 22-year-old Dalton Lee Spires was arrested and charged with murder and possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and 17-year-old Xavier Jamal Lewis was arrested and charged with murder. All three were held without bond.
