Shamarion Austin, 14, was found dead from a gunshot wound at a home on Collins Street in McRae-Helena, Georgia, on the evening of Wednesday, April 1, 2020. Emergency responders recovered her at the scene and the McRae-Helena Police Department described the shooting as a tragic accident in its preliminary findings.

Police reported the firearm was accidentally discharged by a young family member, and two juveniles were involved in the incident. Because minors were involved, the department requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to assist and said the file would be forwarded to the district attorney for review; no immediate charging decision was announced.

Friends, family, and neighbors were left to mourn while officials continued their inquiry. If anyone has information about Shamarion or the events on April 1, please come forward.
